  2. was the eldest daughter of Henry VIII by
  3. Catherine of Aragon. When Edward VI died,
  4. Mary secured the crown without difficulty in
  5. spite of the conspiracy to substitute Lady
  6. Jane Grey. In 1554 Mary married Philip II of
  7. Spain, and as a devout Roman Catholic
  8. obtained the restoration of papal supremacy
  9. and sanctioned the persecution of
  10. Protestants. She was succeeded by her
  11. half-sister Elizabeth I. When Mary died, the
  12. Protestant Elizabeth I gained the throne and
  13. settled the religious question, for the time,
  14. during her long, pivotal reign.
